Of humble parents, Aurelian rose through the army ranks to cavalry general and was proclaimed emperor after the death of Claudius II. He improved Roman fortifications, repelled barbarian invaders, and defeated Queen Zenobia, regaining the empire's eastern provinces. By the time rebel emperor Tetricus II of Gaul surrendered, Aurelian had restored the empire almost to its former size. He was assassinated en route to attack Persia.
