America’s first small-size dollar coin honored women’s rights pioneer Susan B. Anthony. It was the first circulating U.S. coin to depict a historical woman (not Liberty). But the public found it too close in size and appearance to the quarter. So while the series spanned 20 years, coins were only struck 1979-1981 and 1999. Frank Gasparro’s obverse bears Anthony’s portrait surrounded by 13 stars, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and the date. His reverse – first used on the Eisenhower dollar – was adapted from the Apollo 11 mission patch. It shows an eagle landing on the moon with the earth in the background. Above the eagle are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM, with ONE DOLLAR below. Learn More
Susan B Anthony Dollar (1979-1999): A Brief History
Susan B. Anthony dollars were intended to honor this pioneer in women's rights. This was the first time a woman, not including models or mythical figures, had appeared on circulating U.S coinage. Unfortunately, due to it's similarity in size, silver color, and even reeded edge, it was difficult to distinguish from a quarter dollar. Because of this there were no Susan B. Anthony dollars minted for circulation from 1981 to 1998. Additional pieces were minted in 1999 only in anticipation of the Sacajawea dollar debut in 2000.
